“These (eclipses) are the signs which Allah sends. So when you see anything thereof, proceed to remember Allah, invoke Him and ask for His forgiveness.”~ (Prophet Muhammad)
Generally, a solar eclipse is a phenomenon occurring when the new moon passes between the sun and earth in a straight line. This results in causing moon’s shadow on earth. A solar eclipse normally lasts for a few hours from start to finish; however, it can be observed only for a few minutes when the sun is completely blocked out.
A lunar eclipse, on the other hand, takes place when earth bypasses in between of the sun and the moon; hence, casting an umbra (shadow) on the moon itself. This type of eclipse is also called a “Blood Moon”. A lunar eclipse lasts for almost four hours whereas a total lunar eclipse may last nearly to 107 minutes.
As mentioned in the above-given Hadith (saying of Muhammad), eclipses, just like every other thing in cosmos and in earth, are signs of God Almighty. Muhammad, peace be upon him, advises us to remember God, pray to Him and ask for His forgiveness right after seeing an eclipse. Some people also take in false approaches/notions about eclipses i.e. irrational/dogmatic superstitions. Muhammad guides such superstitious people in his following adage:
The sun and the moon are two signs of Allah. They do not eclipse because of the death or birth of someone, when you see them, make haste for the payer.” ~ (Prophet Muhammad)
